Anser Covid Update

Anser Specific Covid Data:

Week of 09/20-09/26 as of today: Number of confirmed cases in students or staff: 5

Week of 09/20-09/26 as of today: Number of students or staff in quarantine*:14

Staffing limitations due to Covid and/or quarantine: None
*Please remember that a student or staff person could be in quarantine for any number of reasons, including cold and allergy symptoms, while awaiting testing. Do not assume that a student or staff member who is absent or in quarantine should be interpreted as a “potential or probable” Covid case.

Wider Community Data

Cases of Covid in Ada county increased to  490.88 cases/100,000, up from 419.24 /100,000) last week.

·       Crisis Standards of Care have been expanded statewide

·       Idaho School Epidemiologists continue to monitor data and concur that schools that implement universal masking do not add to the level of community transmission.

·       The primary driver of increasing Covid cases is unvaccinated adults

The Covid Response Team reviewed this data at their meeting yesterday. Here are a few key points they would like to share:

  • All cases of a student or staff person who have a confirmed case of Covid will be shared with the Anser community as a whole. Crew specific information will not be shared, to ensure the privacy of our students and staff.  The exception to this would be if there were many close contacts identified within one crew.
  • If you child was considered to be a “close contact” you would be contacted directly by school staff.
  • If you were not contacted, your child was not considered to be a close contact and no heightened concern is needed.
  • A close contact continues to be defined by being within 6 feet, for more than 15 minutes of a person who has a confirmed case of Covid, even when all students were wearing masks.
  • Cases of Covid will continue to happen in school. This will be a reality Anser and all schools will face all school year.  Ada county rates of  Covid are very high, and most instances of Covid in schools come from exposures in sports or in out of school exposures. This means most cases come to school, not happen at school.
  • Acknowledging that cases will occur among students the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control continue to advocate for in-person learning for students because of the negative impacts that occur for children due to school closure.
  • Anser’s mitigation measures exceed those in local schools including air scrubbers, high efficiency air filtration, humidifiers and air purifiers in every room,  eating  meals in a variety of locations across campus to reduce unmasked exposure, universal masking indoors, and masking outdoors when distance cannot be maintained.
  • We are committed to prioritizing in-person learning, but will continue to monitor data within the school and outside of the school, and will make needed shifts to operational plans based on that data.
  • If you have questions or concerns about Anser’s procedures or policies, please reach out to Heather Dennis and she can answer those questions or refer you to the Anser Board Covid Communications team.

Illness Decision Tree

In order to have our best chance of keeping school 5 days a week in person, we need the cooperation and support of every family. We are counting on you to keep your child home if they have ANY Covid-19 symptoms.  We understand that dealing with the disruption or routine from a sick child can be really frustrating.  To  prioritize staying open, we  depend on you to be vigilant about ensuring you never send your child to school sick. Linked here is the Illness Decision Tree that we ask you to use to monitor for Covid symptoms and to understand the steps the school will take if your child has Covid-19 symptoms or has a known exposure. Remember we have free, saliva based Covid-19 tests that Anser’s Health Screener can give for home testing of your student.  The best way to prioritize  in-person 5 day week school, is for adults and those over 12 to be vaccinated,  for all people to mask, social distance and carefully monitor for symptoms.  If you have any questions about using the Illness Decision Tree, or Anser protocols please email healthscreener@ansercharterschool.org

SEL Intro Letter for Families

A message from Sarah W...

Dear K-5 Families,

The specials class that I teach, “SEL with Sarah W,” kicked off last week and I so enjoyed working with each crew! At Anser, we support and foster each child’s whole development. In addition to academic growth, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others. This social-emotional learning (SEL) is best supported both in the classroom and on the playground. In my role, I have the opportunity to teach and reinforce skills in both places. Our class session last week focused on safe play on our playground.

This week, I began lessons from Second Step Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improved children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units cover the following topics:

Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.

Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion-management strategies - including stress management for older students - to calm strong feelings.

Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others, take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.

Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:

S: Say the problem

T: Think of Solutions

E: Explore the outcomes

P: Pick a solution

I’ll send regular communications through your child’s teacher and the Flight Plan, to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.

Sincerely,

Sarah Wilson

Student Support Update and Counseling Services

Hello Anser Families,

Welcome back to our returning families and to the new families, we are so glad to have you and your children join our crew.  This school year we hired an additional Student Support Specialist (school counselor) for Elementary students.  Hillard McMorris will primarily focus on supporting students in grades K-5 while Siler McCraw will focus on 6-8.  We will work closely to ensure students social and emotional needs are met at school.  In our roles as the Student Support Specialists, we do not provide professional counseling  but rather we work to provide brief, solution focused counseling.  If you want your child to receive outside counseling services, we can aide in recommending and connecting you with those outside services.

Every year students have the Consent for Services sent home for parent signature.  This year, instead of sending a paper copy, we are utilizing this google form.  Please only submit one google form per family.

Please reach out to us with any concerns or questions about our services or about the google form.

Fall Fund Drive

We are so glad to have your students on campus with us and to have at least some small sense of normalcy restored for our community. Many of the familiar rhythms of our school year look different, yet the strength of the Anser community shines through even during these difficult times. Families, staff, and students continue to support one another and the long-term vision of our school. We are grateful your family is on the journey with us.

Each year we host just two major fundraising initiatives for our school. The first is the Fall Fund Drive, in which we ask our Anser families to help us bridge the funding gap between what Anser receives from the state and what it takes to operate. This year is no different. While the school has received additional Covid-specific funds, the general expenses of operating the school continue to exceed what we receive in state funding. To help make up for a portion of this shortfall, we have a goal to raise $40,000 in donations and pledges for the 2021-2022 school year.

We ask you to join in this effort by making a contribution to the Fall Fund Drive that is meaningful to your family. Your contribution can be made as a monthly pledge or a one-time donation via check, debit, or credit card via on the
Fundraising page of the Anser website. Mailing a check, or calling the front office with your card number also will work. No donation is too small or too big!

We are already accomplishing so much together this school year. Let’s join together to meet this $40,000 goal!

Construction Update

Lot’s of progress was made over the summer on Anser’s expansion project. And the work continues! In the last week they have leveled the entire construction area and have built the frames to pour the footings. This is especially exicitng because we can begin to see the “footprint” of the new building. We will keep sharing updates and pictures throughout the project.

Here are a few questions we have received:

Q: What will be put in the strips of dirt that run along the pickup line sidewalk?
A: We are required to install a 10 foot wide landscaped strip along the sidewalk. A privacy fence will go up between our property and the neighboring property as well.

Q: Will the portable classrooms stay in the front parking lot?
A: No, when construction is complete they will all be removed entirely from the Anser property.

Q: Will we always be entering the school grounds only from 43rd St?
A: No, that is just for this school year. We will continue to have the new drop off/pickup line, but once all of the portables are removed, we will also have some parking and the bus loading zone on 42nd St. Bicycle traffic will also be encouraged to use 42nd St. This will allow us to reduce congestion on just one street.

Q: Will all of the students use the same playground after expansion?
A: No. K-5 students will use the restored playground and a portion of blacktop area. 6th-8th grade students will use the newly built courtyard at the front of the building.

Linked here are the renderings of our new space!
