August 8th, 2023

Hello to our Anser Family Crew,

We are so excited to welcome you back on campus soon for Anser’s 25th school year! We are so grateful to have you as part of our community as a returning family or as a new to Anser family. You are all a critical part of creating the Crew we need to support the whole child learning we foster at Anser.

As we stand together at the beginning of Anser’s 25th year,  we are grounded in this foundational  quote from Kurt Hahn, the father of the Outward Bound/Expeditionary Learning model. “We are Crew, not passengers, strengthened by acts of consequential service to others.” This video, created last year brings to life the many ways Crew supports our students in becoming active, engaged learners that feel responsible and empowered to  create a better world.

Class lists, the lunch calendar, free and reduced lunch forms and lots of other important information is included in this newsletter. I bet I just lost you while you clicked on the Class Lists…I know they are eagerly awaited each year! I can wait here while you review the lists. You're back? Great! Class lists are important and their creation is a labor of love by Crew Leaders each year, who work to ensure each Crew is balanced to support all learners and build connections among students. (Kindergarten families- please see the details about Kindergarten Launch below- where class lists will be created.)

We have some new faces among our staff Crew that we are excited to welcome as well. You can read more about them below.

Each year August brings the Back to School excitement and jitters for all of us- adults and children alike. Each year we hold a Back to School Picnic, hosted by Family Council, to create a time for parents and children to come see the classroom, and meet their teacher and feel connected and grounded for the new year.  Please check out the details about the August 21st picnic below.

This year, we bring back an old Anser tradition, a special Kindergarten Launch just for our littlest goslings! While 1st-8th grade students begin school at 8:30 am on Wednesday August 23rd, our kindergarten students will join us for their first day on Monday August 28th. Read more about it below!

As we get the school year started we will share more information about how we will be commemorating our 25th school year. As a  Crew, we have weathered many storms and accomplished so much to be proud of. Equally important as we look forward to the next twenty five years, is to reflect on our successes and failures, and to persevere to create the best version of Anser. Each year, all of us together, begin anew to create Anser. What each student, parent, teacher, staff member, and board member brings to the life of the school is what helps us to continue to evolve and grow.

We are all the current stewards of Anser and what it can be.  I invite you to step into our Crew circle, to support each child as you support your own, to strengthen your bonds with your fellow parents and Crew Leaders, to seek support from your Crew when you need it, and to envision ways you can support Anser’s continual evolution toward being the best it can be.

In Crew,

Heather Dennis

Kindergarten Information!

We are excited to invite our Kindergarten families to Kindergarten Launch! It's an old Anser tradition we are bringing back this school year. Kindergarten students will start school on their very own special first day- Monday August 28th, at 8:30am. Kindergarten Launch allows  our kindergarten teachers to meet their new students, unpack  their unique traits as learners and to create relationships with families before creating class lists. Please sign up for a time for you and your kindergarten student to meet with teachers on thissign up genius. An appointment is required.

Kindergarten Launch also creates an opportunity for the Anser Directors to meet with our Kindergarten families without the whirlwind of the first day of school happening all around us!

This opportunity to dedicate all of our focus to welcoming our Kindergarteners on the first day of their school journey will help us build a strong Crew. Please plan to join us on Monday August 28th at  8:20am just inside the blacktop gates with your student. We will start with an opening Crew Circle then Kindergarten teachers will lead their Crews into their classrooms. Parents are welcome to stay for a few minutes, or to leave at that time, based on what you feel will best support your child’s transition. We look forward to seeing you and your child soon!

All Things Pick up and Drop off

The Anser Drop Off and Pickup Procedures are linked below. There are separate directions for K-5 students and for 6th-8th grade students. Please review the directions carefully. For returning families there are two changes from last year:

1. K-5 Students and their older siblings will wait inside the gym instead of on the blacktop.
2. If you would like to walk in to retrieve your child, the gates will be opened at 3:30pm to allow you to access the school through the glass double doors that face UPS.

Last year we discovered that a surprising amount of bad weather develops right around 3:30. By having our students wait in the gym, our routines will not be disrupted when there is rain/hail/high winds.
