Whole School Community is back!

A long standing tradition here at Anser has returned! Whole School Community (WSC) is a Core Practice of EL Education schools across the country. These weekly meetings are a time for students to make their learning visible to their peers, to celebrate good character and to discuss school wide topics. Imagine yourself as a young person standing up in front of your peers to share what you have learned! Anser alumni tell us that taking part in Whole School Community, is one of the most powerful experiences they have  had during all of their K-12 schooling. It builds confidence in public speaking, requires students to collaborate as they develop their presentations, and gives them a voice in shared leadership as students lead the development of their presentation. With some modifications to support safer gathering, Becky’s Crew stepped up to lead our first Whole School Community meeting in two years. We couldn’t be prouder!

Trust Walks

Nicole's 4/5 crew participated in a "trust walk" this past week. While some students took on the responsibility of leading, other students took the emotional risk of being led while their eyes were closed. Deep and innovative learning takes risk! Building trust in a Crew creates the conditions for students to feel more confident to take academic risks, and to acknowledge that we all need the support of others to succeed. Nicole's crew discussed the importance of trusting one another, and how connecting with someone you might not know very well builds a stronger Crew!  Here are some reflections from her students:

"Fear and being nervous - it can hold you back. Stop thinking of what could happen, and just do it."

"I felt nervous about someone I wasn’t close to guide me. It made me trust more."

Family Council needs you!

Anser’s Family Council  supports the education program of the school, develops a strong family community and  serves as  conduit between parents and the school administration for communicating parental ideas and concerns. Family Council supports the school with the Back to School Picnic, parent/family social events, provides feedback on policies and procedures brought to the committee, and supports volunteerism within the school. Family Council meets one time per month, August-May, with occasional additional meetings for subcommittees. Elections will be held to add new Family Council members in May.  If you would be interested in learning more about serving on Family Council, please reach out to Family Council President Dave Nelson at vandalfan@gmail.com.

Transportation Update

At its March 15th meeting, the Anser Community Board voted to start an independent transportation program. This vote came after a second year of receiving no bids from local transportation companies to provide the service. Anser staff have secured two buses and are building the necessary processes  to begin providing transportation in the fall. More details about routing and a survey to understand the transportation needs of our families will be sent in the next month. Anser families can help us get this program off to a good start by contributing to  the Fill-A Need at the Anser Spring Celebration. All funds raised in this year’s Fill-A-Need will be used to support the startup of the Transportation program, and to pay for using the buses for Fieldwork  and Adventure next school year. If you, or anyone you know  has a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and would be interested in learning more about being a bus driver for Anser, please contact Anser’s Site Manager, Steve Womack at swomack@ansercharterschool.org
