Spotlight on EL Education Today's Spotlight is from Abby Nichols, our Assistant Education Director!
EL Education and the way we do school at Anser is built on ten design principles. The design principles reflect the educational values of an EL School.
1. The Primacy of Self-Discovery
2. The Having of Wonderful Ideas
3. The Responsibility for Learning
4. Empathy and Caring
5. Success and Failure
6. Collaboration and Competition
7. Diversity and Inclusion
8. The Natural World
9 Solitude and Reflection
10. Service and Compassion
As I walk around the building, I see the design principles alive in our Crew. At recess I see students engaging with the natural world as they admire grasshoppers. In the lunchroom, I hear students reflecting about the school day with friends. In the classrooms, the responsibility for learning is palpable.
While all design principles are equally important, in today's Spotlight on EL Education, I would like to highlight the design principle of The Responsibility for Learning. EL explains it to mean, "Learning is both a personal process of discovery and a social activity. Everyone learns both individually and as part of a group. Every aspect of an EL Education school encourages both children and adults to become increasingly responsible for directing their own personal and collective learning" (EL Education, Core Practices.) This sense of responsibility is truly special to observe, and one of my favorite things to see in a school day. With the school's focus on the 3 dimensions of student achievement, I am excited to see how students' sense of responsibility for learning continues to grow this school year!
