A Note from Anser's Education Director, Destin Tonkin I am delighted to introduce our newest addition to Anser Charter School staff. Susan Bailey Smith, who will be joining us as a Special Education Teacher and interventionist. Her wealth of experience and dedication to inclusive education make her a valuable asset to our school community. Susan served as a Resource Teacher at Summerwind STEM Academy where she excelled in her role as a resource teacher for Grades K-5. Her commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment is evident in her previous positions, including roles as an Exceptional Education Teacher at various institutions such as Morley Nelson Elementary School, Marana High School, Bradshaw Mountain Middle School, and Mountain View Elementary School. Throughout her career, Susan has demonstrated exceptional skills as an educator and leader. Her experience extends beyond the classroom, with roles as a consultant to non-profit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, where she served as a grant writer and contributed to strategic planning and fund development. Additionally, her passion for music education is reflected in her time as a Music Teacher at Park View Schools, teaching Music, High School Choir, and Guitar. Please join me in welcoming Susan to Anser. We look forward to the positive impact she will undoubtedly make in the lives of our students. Warmly, Destin |

Spotlight on Anser Middle School's Week of Adventure We are highlighting two of our 8th Graders reflections on the week of adventure! "A lot of the things I did during adventure week I was already very familiar with, like rock climbing, snowshoeing, and bowling. But the thing that pushed me very far out of my comfort zone was undoubtedly having to play a song in front of the adventure groups. When I was at Boise Rock School, we had an hour to practice a song of our choosing, then had to play it in front of a lot of peers. Only having an hour to practice freaked me out, and didn’t seem like nearly enough time. Not to mention, I go to BRS for guitar class, and my band teacher was watching. But, we did it (and did the best, might I add ;) ). It wasn’t as bad as I had expected, and I actually wanted to do another song afterwards. I think that being pushed out of your comfort zone is a very important part of adventure. If you never leave your comfort zone, you can never discover things you potentially love. For instance, guitar. About a year ago, I wanted to learn an instrument. But I was so intimidated by the idea of playing guitar and the fear of messing up that I put off trying for a long time. Then, my parents got me a guitar for my birthday, and I went to BRS for lessons. I was scared at first, but now I love it. I think that the experience of playing in front of my peers was a very helpful experience for me, because it helped to prepare me for bigger performances in the future." - Merit 8th Grade "This amazing and eventful adventure week was a great experience no matter what we did. I thoroughly enjoy the certain aspects that adventure week has to offer. Something that I look forward to every time that I have done adventure week is the new schedule every week, that makes it interesting for me. I know that I will never have adventure week like Anser does again (unless I end up teaching here) but I will vividly remember the both that I did. I got closer to friends, teachers and staff, but most of all I got closer to myself and what I like doing while also figuring out what I dislike doing. In addition to that, something that I enjoyed doing but challenged me was snowshoeing. Snowshoeing is something that I have never attempted before nor have I heard of that it was something that people do for fun. I didn’t know what to expect but I did it anyway, it was hard but I persevered. I was scared that people would think that I'm a slow walker (especially on snowshoes) so at first I went to the back of the line and also fell a few times at first so I’m glad I did that. Then after, I got into a situation where I needed to take the front of the line or it would clog up so I ended up doing so. I really tried my best to stay behind the leader as close as I could so I wouldn’t hold my group up. When I ended up at the front it was actually uphill most of the time so it tired me out but I kept going. Then we got to belly slide, go into an igloo, and play “predator and prey” so the snowshoeing paid off and I would do it again." - Lucia 8th Grade Click on the picture below for a 60 second recap of the 7th and 8th graders week! |
